Moving from Appropriation to Appreciation in the White-Owned Voice Studio // Jess Baldwin & Michelle Markwart Deveaux

Friday, March 1211:30am – 1:30pm

Jessica Baldwin and Michelle Markwart Deveaux have developed a brave space for white voice teachers of popular musics who are ready to take actionable steps toward repertoire justice. Repertoire justice is the act of educating ourselves and our students around the whos, whats, whens, wheres, whys, and hows of the music we learn and perform.

Teaching pop, rock, Hip Hop, R&B, jazz, etc., in our voice studios requires a commitment to honoring and centering the cultures and voices who have created, and continue to create, these genres.

Jessica and Michelle have created this workshop for white teachers to wrestle with their most pressing concerns, and to learn to do better and be better when engaging Black American musics.

This workshop is for you if…

  • You are new to conversations around race.
  • You’re not sure if and when it’s okay to sing a particular song.
  • You sense that you need to do work, but you’re not sure what to do.
  • You need a container to freely process through your questions without burdening your Black colleagues.
  • You need a container to safely confront your fragility.
  • You’re white.

At the end of this workshop, you will…

  • Be aware of the origins of pop, rock, Hip Hop, R&B, jazz, etc. (Hint: it’s all Black.)
  • Have a clear rubric that allows you to flip the script on how you approach repertoire.
  • Have a resource list to empower you to continue your own deep work.
  • Have a clearer understanding of how racist behaviors manifest in your studio.
  • Have released your Black colleagues from being encumbered by your initial queries.

Out of the Classical Closet: Unlock the Door to Your Inner Artist // Jess Baldwin and Julie Dean

A week-long artist exploration and recovery experience for singers who feel trapped, unsatisfied, or out of place in classical music

Tuesday, March 23 6:00 – 9:30pm EST
Friday, March 26 11am-1pm EST
Tuesday, March 30 6:00-9:30pm EST

After recently attending a workshop or talking to peers and colleagues about popular styles of music, you were surprised to find you have a lot of personal pain around singing those musics. You know if you don’t work through it for yourself, you will suffer. If you teach, your students will suffer, too.

You were told that singing other styles of music was going to hurt your voice. You’ve learned that it’s not true. Now, after singing classical music primarily to “preserve and protect” your voice, you feel cheated out of the opportunity to follow your heart, and you’re struggling with resentment and confusion about your artistic path.

You spent tons of time, money, and energy on a classical music degree (or three), but you never stopped feeling the pull toward the music you originally loved to sing before college. When you see other people singing other styles, you’re reminded of the joy of singing that music, and you can’t help but feel sad and maybe a bit jealous. You want to incorporate that music into your artist life, but don’t know how.

You were well on your way to having a distinct style and identity before college, but the things that made you and your voice unique were edited out to conform to classical industry and academic standards. Now you feel trapped inside the standards. Instead of feeling free, you feel like a fraud. After being told who you should be and how you should sound for years in school, you feel insecure in your ability to make your own choices about your style and identity. Where do you begin? And how do you make choices about your path with confidence?

No more watching and waiting. It’s time to unlock the door to your inner artist.

  • Imagine healing and openness around other styles of music.
  • Imagine clarity about your path and bravery to claim what you truly want.
  • Imagine the joy of singing what you really love and the motivation to pursue it.
  • Imagine being free to step into spaces (and even create new spaces!) where you truly belong.

In this 8-day artistic exploration,

  • You’ll gain clarity and insight about who you want to be and where you want to go as an artist.
  • You’ll get (back) in touch with your inner artist.
  • You’ll reignite a love and excitement for what you can do in music.
  • You’ll learn that you don’t need (and never needed) academic approval to sing, enjoy, and identify with other musics.
  • You’ll give yourself permission to stop wasting time on what's not important to you as a singer, musician, and artist.
  • You’ll have the tools you need to focus your time, money, and energy in the areas that connect your voice to your most authentic self.
